Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition; A Near Fine book in a Near Fine dust jacket. SIGNED by Ms. Du Maurier on the half title page. An outstanding copy of this novel, very scarce signed, originally begun by Du Maurier's friend and mentor Arthur Quiller-Couch, then completed by Du Maurier at the request of Quiller-Couch's daughter; Du Maurier is of course the author of the classic novels "Rebecca", "My Cousin Rachel", etc. This copy is in near fine condition with a square tight binding, bright blue spine lettering, and clean, white pages throughout; light foxing is present to the page edges and paste downs with a larger area of foxing to the epigraph page (possibly from a card or bookmark), else fine. Housed in a clean, crisp, and bright dust jacket that shows only mild rubbing to the edges, a small, mostly inconspicuous stain to the front panel, and some mild foxing to the spine, back panel, and flap edges. Overall, a beautiful example of this title, probably the nicest signed copy currently available in the marketplace. A nice edition to the Du Maurier collector's library or English Literature collection. Not remaindered, not price clipped ($4.50 intact), and not ex-library; protected in a Mylar sleeve and will ship in a sturdy box. Signed by Author(s).

Cloth. Condition: Good+. FIRST UK EDITION, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. 8vo, with b/w frontispiece and plates. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Spine sunned, bruising and wear to extremities, edges toned, a few spots. Inscribed by Aldrich in blue biro to ffep: "To Joan Gilbert/ My most attractive interviewer on TV or anywhere/ With thanks and best regards/ Dick Aldrich/ London April 1955", Tony Chance's ex libris and 'librãris' labels to ffep, Times obituary clipping, for Gilbert, pasted to rear fep and pastedown. Else, clean and tidy. In supplied dust jacket: creased and frayed, chipped at extremities, amateur tape repair to reverse, but the fabulous front panel illustration remains bright. A pleasing association copy of Aldrich's best-selling memoir. Good+/ good-only From Aldrich's inscription it seems that Gilbert interviewed him in London in 1955, perhaps during a tour promoting his book. Richard Stoddard Aldrich (19021986) was an American theatrical manager "of great repute", who married Gertrude Lawrence in 1940, becoming her second husband. The couple remained together until her sudden and unexpected death from cancer in 1952. Joan Gilbert (1906-1991) was a British television presenter and personality, who was "'the face' of the BBC's longest running topical television show Picture Page (1936-1952)" (Charlesworth, 2018). She went on to write for the TV Mirror and appear "on the new wave of Women's Programmes on BBC Television such as About the Home" (Marcus, 2010). Like Lawrence, Gilbert was "effervescent and unpredictable" and a popular and provocative figure (ibid). Whilst first published in the US by Greystone Press in 1954 (in a much less fabulous dust jacket), the British edition was the first to feature Daphne Du Maurier's 'Foreword'. Du Maurier and Lawrence had become close when the actor played the lead in the author's play, September Tide (1948). In her foreword tribute, Du Maurier observed of her friend and lover: "An actress of instinct and impulse, of swift and sudden change, of ever-varying mood, she was herself a light that danced and swayed, that burnt, not with a dull lamp's steady glow, but with all the divine uncertainty of flickering candles on a Christmas tree" (Du Maurier, here). From the library of Tony M. Chance. A bibliophile and collector from Bromsgrove, Chance amassed a significant collection of signed modern literature, as well as history and arts books. He frequently extra-illustrated his books with related ephemera, often signed. Diane Charlesworth (2018) 'Female presence at the BBC: Uncovering the hidden history of Joan Gilbert (1938-1962),' paper at Doing Women's Film and Television History Conference IV, UoSouthampton; Laurence Marcus (2010) 'Joan Gilbert,' Teletronic Blog.

Add to basketEchtfoto. Condition: Gut. Tolle Farbfoto der Autorin mit zwei Hunden von Daphne du Maurier bildseitig mit blauem Kuli signiert /// Autogramm Autograph signiert signed signee /// Dame Daphne Busson du Maurier, Lady Browning, DBE (* 13. Mai 1907 in London; ? 19. Vertical abrasion strips on the front and rear paste-downs where the dust jacket was once taped down. Name and date (Dorothy Bates/ Sept. 1966) in orange marker on the front endpaper. The jacket is good only with several closed tears, soiling, and beige tape strips along the edges of the flaps. This copy, however, has two typed letters signed by "Daphne du Maurier" and Daphne du Maurier Browning", respectively; the first is glued onto the title page, and the second is a full-page letter glued to page ix just after the Acknowledgments page. The first letter on the title page is 7 typed lines signed in ink: Do ask Mr. Robinson of the Sowerby Bridge Public Library if he has a copy of my Fowey sisters book, just out, called "Old Maids Remember." It is delightful, and you would love it, full of glimpses of our younger days, and amusing photographs of the three of us. With best wishes always, Yours very sincerely "Daphne du Maurier" (blue ink) The second letter after the acknowledgments is 17 typed lines signed in blue ink: "Daphne du Maurier Browning": "So glad you liked my sisters book. I shall tell her when she next comes to lunch. She comes once a week, generally on Sundays, but she is a much busier person than I am, on her parish council, Conservative committees, good works, and does a tremendous amount locally. I love to fancy the three of us are a bit Bronte-ish as sisters, with Angela as Charlotte, myself the solitary one as Emily meeting no one (!) and Jeanne the youngest, who became Catholic, and draws so well, and is musical, is Anne! Keep up the sleuth-work over the Branwell note-book, and think of me next week surrounded by grandchildren and no doubt slipping away in to the woods now and again to get some peace! Yours very sincerely, "Daphne du Maurier Browning" (in bright blue ink) Angela du Maurier (1904 2002) was an English novelist who also wrote two volumes of autobiography, It's Only the Sister(1951) and Old Maids Remember. She was the sister of Daphne du Maurier. The eldest of three daughters of the famous actor-manager Sir Gerald du Maurier and actress Muriel Beaumont (maternal niece of William Comyns Beaumont), she was born in St Pancras, London. Her grandfather was the author and Punch cartoonist George du Maurier, who created the character of Svengali in the novel Trilby. Although three years older than her better known sisterDaphne, she outlived her by thirteen years. Originally aspiring to follow the family tradition of acting, she planned to be an actress and spent two seasons on the stage. She played Wendy Darling alongside both Gladys Cooper and Dorothy Dickson as Peter Pan. She worked on the land inCornwall during the war and travelled extensively in Europe. She later turned to writing, with the release of her earlier works coinciding with the publication of her sister's Rebecca and Jamaica Inn. Her works of fiction include The Road to Leenane, Pilgrims by the Way, The Perplexed Heart, Reveille and Treveryan. She lived at Ferryside, the family house in Cornwall, for most of her life. She died inWandsworth, London, aged 97. (Wikipedia) First Edition with "First Published 1966" on the copyright page and no subsequent printings listed.

Rebecca is a 1938 Gothic novel written by English author Daphne du Maurier. The novel depicts an unnamed young woman who marries a wealthy widower, before discovering that both he and his household are haunted by the memory of his late first wife, the title character. Rebecca sold 2.8 million copies between its publication in 1938 and 1965. It has been adapted numerous times for stage and screen, including a 1939 play by du Maurier herself, and the film Rebecca (1940), directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The book looks like it was originally owned by Joan Henry, an English author and former débutante; she was jailed for passing a fraudulent cheque in 1951 and her best-known works were based on her experiences in prison, the semi-autobiographical Who Lie in Gaol. Bertrand Russell, who was very fond of her, was her mother's first cousin. Her unusual name and her future connections to the publisher Gollancz seem to prove that this was indeed her copy - however we should mention that we could not find any recorded sample of her handwriting which could help us make comparisons with the ownership signature on the bookplate.
