The reader is advised early that the name "Wydrop" was coined by early European settlers to the Wairarapa, who found difficulty pronouncing that Maori name. Among these settlers were the Beetham and Williams families, whose close association began when Annie Beetham married Thomas Williams at Hutt Valley late in 1858. The families were to become prominant pioneers of the Wairarapa.
