A large, gray building at 64 Dietla Street in Cracow today houses a few institutions and a hostel. Walking past it we have no idea what those walls witnessed between 1939 and 1941. An observant passerby may only notice the barely visible inscription above the gate: JWEISH, and underneath a few Hebrew letters. It is a remnant of the sign: Educational Institution of the Jewish Orphans. The Jewish Orphanage was run in this building between 1876 and 1941. The fate of this home's wards during the German occupation is the subject of the book you are holding in your hands.
