From the Introduction: The field of racehourse pedigrees has hitherto (book published 1973) been a specialized interest only to a minority. But the last two decades have seen racing mushroom from a sport to a flourishing industry. The compiling of pedigrees is no longer a science for a small number of specialists, but an important commercial facet of Thoroughbred breeding today. The purpose of this work is, therefore, not only to enable breeders both large and small to gain the best commercial value from understanding the significance of pedigrees, but also to enlighten the layman and to aid him to open up for himself a new field of knowledge.
