Book Description Soft Cover Full Gloss. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. ### European Domestic Architecture - Its Development from earl Times- 1969 ### THIS BOOK: Classified as FINE. Signs of some minor shelf wear, no bumping, scribbling or underlining throughout. Quality art paper used for pages, they are still clean and clear. A fasinating contents or european dwellings. ### The book is an original attempt to trace the development of domestic architecture (castles, palaces, town and country houses, villas) from its beginnings in early civilizations to recent times. An architect is also a lecturer and author, and its text is scholarly and informed but highly lucid. Illustrated with well over 100 photographs and plans, it will be of great value to architectural students of all ages and anyone interested in the story of architecture. The book discusses the origins of various domestic buildings and shows that these were nearly all invented by Roman times. Separate sections discuss their emergence from the megaron and bit-hilani of antiquity, courtyard, central hall, or unplanned growth such as produced the Minoan palaces, hill towns or sprawling courtyard units (like modern Kasbahs). The second chapter, 'the castle and the palace', starts in the middle ages, shows how the feudal structure of the castle and monastery changed to an urban design of town palaces, cathedrals, schools, guilds, etc., how central government and autocracy removed the palace and insulated it (Versailles) and how the palace finally becomes a monument and a museum. The third and fourth chapters cover the townhouse (mainly contrasting the vertical row house of Dutch and English tradition with the spreading courtyard type of the French Hotel particular), the villa and the country house, from the Renaissance to the 18th century. Sherban Cantacuzino is the author of two other Picture backs, Modern Houses of the World and Great Modern Architecture. He is also the Foreign Editor of Architectural Review.###. No Author signature.
