Between the 15th and 19th centuries it is estimated that between 30 to 40 million people died as a result of the slave trade. "Black Cargoes tells the full story of this barbaric trade in people, which brutalised all those involved. In Africa it tore families and tribes apart. Men and women were stripped of their humanity and reduced to mere units of production: captured, packed like merchandise into the holds of unsanitary ships, tossed overboard if they became sick, or sold in West Indian and American markets into perpetual servitude. In America it gave rise to the plantation system, the civil war and a bitter legacy of racism . And in Britain it is also woven into the fabric of our society, helping to finance the Industrial Revolution and enrich cities such as Bristol and Liverpool." Â from rear panel blurb. Book Description Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A scholarly general history of the Atlantic slave trade, this volume tells the story of how nearly 40 million Africans died between the 17th and 19th centuries. It is a story of greed, violence, daring and incredible callousness, enacted by both white and black men. In England and France it produced enormous fortunes that helped to finance the Industrial Revolution. In Africa it produced misery and social disintegration. In America it gave rise to the plantation system, the maritime trade of New England and the Civil War. The book explains how, where and why slaves were captured, how they were purchased by sea captains and packed into holds like merchandise, and how the survivors were sold in the West Indian and American markets. It also explains the rise of the anti-slavery movements, of the legal abolition of the trade by Britain in 1807 and of its persistence, in spite of the efforts of the Royal Navy, until the latter part of the 18th century. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR004592778
