Vertical Seismic Profiling: Principles (Handbook of Geophysical Exploration: Seismic Exploration) - Hardcover

9780080435183: Vertical Seismic Profiling: Principles (Handbook of Geophysical Exploration: Seismic Exploration)

Synopsis

The book is a comprehensive and concise systematic presentation of the technique of Vertical Seismic Profiling for the study of subsurface properties and structure. Compared to the previous editions from 1983 and 1985, the 1999 edition will contain much new material on equipment advances (in the fields of, a.o., multi-level receiver arrays, small diameter receivers, vertical cable arrays, fiber optic cable) and expanded applications (such as, reverse VSP, drill bit source, 3-D VSP imaging, stratigraphic calibration of 3-D seismic images, crosswell profiling, single-well imaging systems). Also, the new book will contain reflections on the industry VSP research climate and the role of the US National laboratories in VSP Research.

About the Author

hardage.jpg

Bob A. Hardage is a Senior Research Scientist at The Bureau of Economic Geology and Lead Scientist for the Exploration Geophysics Laboratory. He received a Ph.D. in physics from Oklahoma State University after completing a NASA-sponsored investigation of micrometeorite impact on space vehicles. He began work for Phillips Petroleum Company in 1966 and concentrated on geophysical modeling, seismic imaging, seismic stratigraphy, vertical seismic profiling, and exploration management. After serving as Exploration Manager, Asia and Latin America, he left Phillips in 1988 to join Western Atlas International, Inc., where he was Vice President of Geophysical Development and Marketing for Atlas Wireline Services until 1991. Dr. Hardage has authored over 60 technical papers, taught numerous public schools on 3-D seismic technology, seismic stratigraphy, and vertical seismic profiling in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and conducted several internal, continuing education courses for individual companies. 3500 copies of his book, Vertical Seismic Profiling, have been purchased by explorationists, and the book is in its third printing. He has also written a second book, Seismic Stratigraphy; prepared chapters in AAPG Memoir 39-Seismic Stratigraphy II, the SEG book Reservoir Geophysics, and the combined AAPG-SEG publication 3D Seismic Atlas; and published a third book, Crosswell Seismology and Reverse VSP. He is a past Editor of Geophysics. His current interest is the development of multi-component seismic technology for improved characterization of reservoir systems.
