About this Item
FIRST EDITION. 8 vo. Contemp. half cloth. xxiv, 312 (i.e. 512) pp. A few woodcut figs. in the text. Signed bookplate of the late gemologist, John Sinkankas. Ex-library with old gilt call number at foot of spine, bookplate, and rubberstamps (title clean); a good to very good copy. Professor of chemistry at Bonn, Bischof's (1792-1870) research interests in geology led to his founding of the new field of geochemistry. "The chief work of his volcanistic period was "Wärmelehre." (1837). In this work he presented a critical compilation of all that was known at the time, together with many of his own observations on the thermal properties of the earth's surface, including observations made in mines. From these he derived his theories of thermal gradients, which were essentially correct, and his ideas on the origin of volcanism and the heat required for his kind of 'metamorphic' transformation. He concluded that the observed heat gradients explained satisfactorily all known volcanic activity, as well as springs and earthquakes." (D.S.B.). Zittel, p. 202. Geology Emerging 223. Roller & Goodman I.121. Seller Inventory # 000150
