John Eberle (1787-1838) completed his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1809. The early days of his medical practice in his native Lancaster, Pennsylvania were interrupted by his service as a surgeon in the War of 1812. Thereafter he practiced in Philadelphia, established and edited (1818-30) the 'American Medical Recorder, and was a founding faculty member of Jefferson Medical College. In the 1830's he was at the Medical College of Ohio and Transylvania University and edited two medical journals there. His comprehensive pediatrics text was among the early such works authored by an American. His success is measure by a second edition published the year after the first and a posthumous fourth edition (1857). Cordasco 30-0298. Blocker Coll., p.121 - 4th ed. Reynolds 2-541 - 3rd ed. Trans.
