Inscribed by the author's wife Kate Cushing. First edition, third printing, July 1936 (first publication was May). Blue cloth, a little bumped to corners and top/base of spine, with some small bumps to front and some foxing to surfaces; spine slightly sunned. Front board with blind-embossed Neptune decoration. Binding strong. Contents clean and bright.Front pastedown with bookplate of Victoria Townshend Durham with note that the book was given to her by the author's wife in 1937. Fep inscribed in pencil "Sorry to be slow in sending - good to read on the steamers! K. Cushing". Below the inscription a pasted printed copy of the poem 'The return to Flanders' by James Norman Hall. Slight tanning to endpapers. Verso of fep with newspaper notices from 1938 and 1972 relating to the WWI poet John McRae. Half-title page has affixed obituary of Harvey Cushing from The Times October 1939, and a commemorative cloth poppy with leaves and stalk. Frontispiece b/w photograph. Detached front and flaps from the dustjacket inserted into dust jacket protector. xxi, 534pp. Seller Inventory # 5599
