Lose eingeschlagen in ältere, uniforme Schutzumschläge aus Kleisterpapier, handschriftliche Rückenschilder. Einbände tadellos, lediglich die Schutzumschläge etwas berieben mit kleinen Schäden durch Entfernung von Bibliothekschildchen. Papier gebräunt, Bd. 1 zu Beginn etwas wasserrandig. Jeweils mit Stempel der Franziskaner [-innen] bibliotheken der Klöster Gorheim und Fulda auf den Titelblättern. Weller, Druckorte I, 299. Deschamps 223. NDB IX, 604. Neyen, Biographie Luxemb. I, S. 252f. Über den Verlags- und Druckort gehen die Meinungen weit auseinander. Nach Deschamps in Bouillion (Belgien, damals Luxemburg), nach Weller in Würzburg, nach NDB in Frankfurt erschienen. Beide Bände in erster Ausgabe. Der Trierer Weihbischof Johann Nikolaus von Hontheim (1701 Trier - 1790 Montquintin, Luxemburg) wurde über seine Historiker-Leistungen hinaus vor allem durch seine kirchenreformatorische Schrift "De statu ecclesiae" berühmt, die unter dem Pseudonym Febronius 1763 erschienen war. Das Werk wurde schon 1764 auf den Index der verbotenen Bücher gesetzt, breitete sich jedoch rasch in ganz Europa aus. Der Protest gegen den römischen Zentralismus war vor allem in Deutschland auf fruchtbaren Boden gefallen (16 von 26 deutschen Fürstbischöfen publizierten die Indizierung nicht!). Erst 1778 gab der H. seine Verfasserschaft zu. Von 1770-74 veröffentlichte Hontheim noch drei weitere Bände. Die Kleisterpapier-Schutzumschläge hergestellt aus alten montierten Rechnungspapieren.
