About this Item
Second Printing, December 1932. Signed by the author on a card which is affixed to the front free end paper. The inscription reads 'With all best wishes E. Alexander Powell, Journeys End, Christmas 1932' (See the photo). Once listed, this will be the Only Signed copy of this book for sale anywhere on the Internet. You can read a little bit about the author below after I've described the condition of the book. So, take a look at the photographs. See what you think. I think the covers have held up quite well. The book is nearly 85 years old. These blue covers are mostly clean, there are a few spots near the bottom of the spine. The gilt lettering on the front is fairly bright, on the spine it is only somewhat faded. The top margin of the front has some color fading. The bottom right-hand corner of the front has a bit of wear. So do the spine ends. Nothing unusual. The edges of the book are in good shape. The book is solidly bound and the pages are quite clean (there are just a few small spots on the margins of a few of the early pages and a very few spots after that over the entire book which runs 452 pages). The pages are in excellent condition. They are very bright and do not appear to have suffered any creases or dogeared corners. There aren't any markings or attachments. Underneath the signed card there is a penned gift inscription to a Dr. Morrison 'with xmas greetings, from the Andersons' that is also dated 1932. There isn't any other writing to be found anywhere in the book. It's all just blank pages. No, there are printed words too. Lots of words, lots of adventures. That covers it. 'E. Alexander Powell (August 16, 1879 ? November 13, 1957) was an American war correspondent during World War I and author. He generally published material under the name E. Alexander Powell; his full name was Edward Alexander Powell. Powell was born in Syracuse, New York in 1879. In 1898?1899 he worked for the Syracuse Journal, and in 1902 he became editor of Craftsman. From 1903-1904 he was an advertising manager for the Smith Premier Typewriter Company, based in London, England, and in 1905-1906 he worked in the Near East as a correspondent for British and American publications. From 1906-1909 he was a Consular official in Syria and Egypt. Powell worked as a war correspondent during World War I and his position as a neutral allowed him access to both sides of the battle lines, from 1914 onwards. With the entry of the United States into the Great War in 1917, Powell was commissioned as a captain in military intelligence. He was injured in September 1918, and convalesced until the Armistice in November of that year, thereafter returning to the US. He left the US Armed Services with the rank of Major. Powell published his war journalism in newspapers and magazines such as The War Illustrated, New York World and the Daily Mail and his war books were published by Charles Scribner's Sons. Powell then switched from journalism to a successful career as an adventure and travel writer, traveling widely across the globe and publishing some 20 more books between 1920 and 1954. Powell married Jessie Northrup Powell, then subsequently Florence Taylor Powell. He died at Falls Village, Connecticut in 1957. His papers are held in the US Library of Congress'.
