About this Item
An autograph letter signed by Havelock Ellis; a single sheet of 7" x 9" paper with writing on both sides. Very good; paper lightly age-toned with one horizontal crease and multiple small punctures around the border. Also included is a sketch, apparently of Ellis, on a sheet of 5" x 8" paper. Ellis's signature is in the bottom margin beneath the drawing. Dated April 5, 1931, the letter compliments the artist's talents despite having no formal training, and discusses portraiture based off of photographs. Very good; lightly age-toned with numerous small punctures. Havelock Ellis. Impression and Comments Second Series 1914 - 1920. London: Constable and Company LTD., 1921. Octavo, 248 pages. Bound in blue cloth with gold lettering to spine. Very good. Fading and light soiling to boards. Bumping to head and tail with rubbing to edges and corners. Age toning throughout. Havelock Ellis. Concerning Jude the Obscure. London: The Ulysses Bookshop, 1931. Limited edition, no. 103 of 185. Signed by the author on the limitations page. Additionally inscribed by the author to John Gawsworth on the title page. Good. Paper-covered boards with black lettering on front board and black cloth spine. Boards tanned with bumping to edges and corners; paper and cloth at lower edge with some chips. Several stains to boards; boards and text block with dark damp staining to lower third throughout. Text block slightly age-toned and somewhat foxed. With the bookplate of John McClelland on front pastedown. An additional slip affixed to the rear pastedown explains that John Gawsworth, a poet, acted as Ellis's amanuensis for the last years of his life and edited a number of his publications. Enemy action during the Blitz resulted in almost complete destruction of Gawsworth's library, and the few books that survived were smoke and water damaged.
