Welch, with affectionate regards and the gratitude of John Hays Hammond, Washington DC, Dec. 1918," on the front endpaper. ---- The recipient, William Henry Welch, a physician, pathologist, and educator, founded the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, the first school of public health in the country.
