A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Senator Elihu Root, with many thanks for his kindness, from William Roscoe Thayer, Cambridge: September 30, 1919," on the half-title page; Thayer acknowledged Root in the preface and discussed his relationship with Roosevelt throughout the volume. ---- The recipient, Elihu Root, who served as secretary of war and secretary of state under McKinley and Roosevelt, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. Roosevelt told his Harvard classmate and intimate friend Thayer that "Root is the greatest intellectual force in American life since Lincoln." A significant work with a stellar provenance.
