Grey/blue decorated cloth with gilt-lettered black calf spine label, slipcase. xiv, 406pp. Color frontispiece, numerous line drawings (some color), full-page color plates, pictorial endpapers. Fine/near fine. Wonderfully tight and fresh copy of the second title in the LEC's 31st series, Cooper's second novel (first published 1821) and the title that placed him on the literary map, becoming one of the first bestsellers in this country. This copy bears choice addition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a choice 6½" X 10" original steel-engraved full-length portrait of a contemplative older Cooper, seated in a study-type setting with page in hand. Mildly age toned. Facsimile signature beneath and published by New York publisher Johnson, Fry & Co. in 1861.
