About this Item
An expansive scrapbook of over 200 individual pieces of ephemera collected by Ethel Cook (c.1908-2006) while she was a student in New London, Connecticut, in the late 1920s. Types of ephemera include periodical clippings, hotel stationary, printed programs and playbills, club meeting ephemera, song sheets, correspondence, ribbons and pins, a calendar, and even a signed postcard by Count Luckner. The majority of the ephemera memorializes Ethel's time at Connecticut College before she graduated in 1929, such as a large "Darwin Was Right" sign (which was used by the upperclassmen in a little light hazing), and programs from her time in the College's drama and debate clubs. Many concert programs and theatrical ephemera from New York, Boston, and Hartford are included. The Bushnell in Hartford is particularly well represented; it had just opened in 1930 when Ethel was assembling this scrapbook. An excellent representation of what arts and culture were available to a young Connecticut woman in the 1920s and 1930s. Folio (15.75" by 10.75"), approx. 30 leaves, bound with cord in original stamped cloth boards. Very good; some ephemera loose, scrapbook paper brittle, boards loose and worn.
