Map illustrated endpapers, both different, showing the various routes taken by the author on his travels. Black-and-white illustration, of the author painted in Addis Ababa. The text is illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs and illustrations, throughout the text. Red coloured cloth boards with gilt titles to the backstrip. In this book the author describes his travels to historic places in the world. From the palace at Ekaterinburg in Russia where the last Czar and his family were murdered, the route taking in the footsteps of Hannibal -- using elephants, his visiting of the citadel in Haiti where King Christophe and his court ruled plus other out of the way places visited. Not only is the book a travelogue of, unknown and mysterious places for the 1930s, but also included is relevant historical background of the people and of events that occurred in the places visited. A little bumping and rubbing to the book corners and to the backstrip edges. Cocking of the spine. Browning and staining to the text block edges, more so to the lower text block edge.
