An aeronautic icon, Guggenheim served on the National Advisory Committee of Aeronautics. ---- The recipient, the veteran U.S. diplomat Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice and United Nations ambassador at large, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin.
