About this Item
Large octavo, gray cloth lettered in gilt; worn dust jacket. First edition, first printing. A presentation copy, inscribed by the editor W. S. Lewis to Philip C. Jessup: "To Phil & Lois, with gratitude, Lefty," on the front endpaper; accompanied by an autograph letter from Lewis to Jessup discussing the publication of Walpole's correspondence. In the Acknowledgment section, Lewis thanked Jessup for help in identifying two portraits. Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis, "Lefty" to his friends, was the general editor of the multi-volume "Yale Edition of Horace Walpole's Correspondence." The recipient Jessup, a United Nations ambassador at large and judge on the International Court of Justice at The Hague, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. An unusual association, linking the icons of 20th century diplomacy and 18th century scholarship. Seller Inventory # ABE-17147262483
