Thick quarto volume - [xvi], 376 pages. Medallion frontispiece illustration with protective tissue guard. Numerous in-text illustrations. The original publisher's front panel and spine are bound in at the rear. Exquisitely bound by Kelliegram, with their original gilt stamp on the rear lower dentelle. The crushed red morocco binding is elaborately decorated a floral latticework design with a solid pool of red in the center of the front panel. This floral panel is continued to the spine with five of the six panels thus decorated with the sixth containing the author and title. The rear panel is solid red with a thin gilt border. The interior boards show a very broad dentelle, nearly an inch deep with five concentric gilt borders, with decorative floral clusters to the corners. In a stunning contrast there is featured green silk doublures and endpapers as well as a green silk page marker. This volume also contains an autograph letter, signed from Tennyson to the Duchess of Sutherland written on mourning stationary with a quarter inch black border. This letter is laid in. The Duchess of Sutherland (1829-1888) was an advocate and supporter of the arts and held Tennyson in particular high regard. Tennyson accepted a peerage in 1884 becoming Alfred Lord Tennyson.
