Hartley Wicksteed/ To His Aunt Matilda Lupton /Dec: 1883.', pale yellow endpapers, light spotting to prelims & final leaves & rear endpaper browned, bound in original green cloth, gilt titled to spine & front board, top & bottom edges ruled in black, slight wear to head & tail of spine & small spot to spine, otherwise sound & very good. "John Hamilton Wicksteed (1851-1883), was born in Leeds in 1851. He studied at University College School, London before doing his apprenticeship in Leeds. He then worked on various water supply and sewerage projects. In 1877, he was appointed as a water supply engineer for Van Staden's waterworks in Port Elizabeth. He designed and built the city's waterworks and when the works were almost complete, Wicksteed was appointed town engineer and architect in 1881. However, he resigned only four months later complaining of extreme stress. Soon afterwards Wicksteed committed suicide."Presentation copy. Seller Inventory # 635
