Single-paged autograph letter signed by Samuel Clemens with one vertical fold and two horizontal. In Very Good condition. Adhesive residue to left-side of page, and finger stain to top left corner. Dated January 10 with no year written, but with recipient note '1/16.72'. It is written on what appears to be a piece of notebook paper, as discerned by faint blue horizontal lines. Letter reads in full: "Wheeling, Jan. 10. / Redpath and Fall - / Gentlemen - Enclosed please find N.Y. draft in your favor for $180.00 P. Ack. [Please acknowledge] - / Yours truly Samuel L. Clemens." Rear docketed: "Clemens Samuel L. Wheeling, W Va. Jan. 10 72. Shelved in Case 0 binder. Samuel Clemens was in Wheeling, WV for a lecture on his book "Roughing It", which was held by the Boston Lyceum Bureau. James Redpath and George Fall were the founders of this bureau, and supplied promotional materials for Clemen's lectures. This, including the Lyceum's 10% commission fee, accounts for Clemens's need to send them a check. This is one of five letters that Clemens wrote to Redpath that week regarding payments. The Boston Lyceum Bureau was a part of the lyceum movement in the mid-19th century that provided adult educational programs, mainly in the Northeast and Midwest. BAL 3411. 1376400.
