About this Item
The salutation of a letter from the clergyman and antiquary, Philip Morant in whose honour a school has been named in his native Colchester. The document which is made from laid paper measures about 20x6cm with two old folds. In Morant's hand is written: 'Your most obedient humble Servant Phil: Morant F.A.S. [flourish] Colchester April 15. 1760.' To the verso are 7 lines of Morant's letter in which he writes about the three manuscript copies of a work 'printed in 1699. 8vo under this title, 'A relation of the Death of David Rizzi, chief Favorite to Mary Stuart Queen of Scotland.'. The document has been tipped onto an album leaf taken from a collection of autographs and letters which was compiled by a member of the Lane family of Kings Bromley Hall near Lichfield during the nineteenth century.
