Nürnberg, (1811-1817). Very large engraving on strong paper. Christ crucified, surrounded by angels, two of whom are obscuring the sun; Death personified in the foreground to right. Below image signed in the plate "Erfunden und gezeichnet von H. Füger - Gestochen von J.F. Leÿbold." And "Gedruckt von Heubach - Nürnberg beÿ J.F. Frauenholz & Co." At top lettered "Subscriptions Exemplar". 53 x 38,8 cm.*Nagler VIII, 424, Nos. 10-21. Thieme-Becker XII, 556. In database of British Museum. Plate from a series of twelve prints on motifs from Klopstock's Messias (Messiah), an epic poem published 1748-1773 by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock (Quedlinburg 1724-Hamburg 1803). Johann Friedrich Leybold began the series in 1811, but only 10 plates had been finished by 1817. The series was completed by Reindel. - Ample margins, very lightly foxed.[(6082)].
