Paris, 1712. Very large oblong etching and engraving on strong paper. Christ in the house of Martha and Mary: Jesus sitting in a chair at right, Mary kneeling at his feet and listening to him, and Martha standing upset behind her; on the right, Peter and John observing the scene. At bottom signed in the plate "A. Coypel pinx. Lud. Simonneau sculp. C.P.R." and "Maria optimam partem elegit. Luc Cap. X. Vers. 42". "Le tableau original est à Versailles dans le Cabinet de Monseigneur le Duc de Bourgogne". With 2 lines of French dedication to Jérôme Phelypeaux in lower margin, his arms in center of bottom margin:. "Dedié a Messire Jerôme Phelypeaux Comte de Maurepas, Conseiller du Roy . Par son tres humble et tres obeïssant serviteur Louis Simonneau". "A Paris chez Simonneau . ruë de Bievre la 4e porte Cochere entrant par la place Maubert au fond de la 2e Cour. Martha, the busy housekeeper, chided her contemplative sister, Mary of Bethany (often identified as Mary Magdalene), for sitting apparently idle at Christ's feet and listening to his words. But Christ told Mary that it was she who played the better, indeed the necessary role. The original painting by Antoine Coypel is today lost. It was engraved by Louis Simonneau in 1712, according to N. Garnier, Antoine Coypel, 1989, No. 105, fig. 299. - Good impression with margins; collector's stamp on verso of 'Grossh.
