Lewis to the Jessups: "To Phil & Lois (who proved their friendship by buying it), from Lefty, Norfolk, Nov. 4, 1961," on the front endpaper; accompanied by 5 autograph letters from Lewis to Jessup discussing the Austin Riggs Psychiatric Institute, Stockbridge, MA; the continuing publication of Walpole's correspondence; mutual friends; and upcoming public talks. Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis, "Lefty" to his friends, was the general editor of the multi-volume Yale Edition of Horace Walpole's Correspondence. Lois Walcott Kellogg Jessup worked tirelessly for the American Friends Service Committee, the U.S. Children's Bureau (preparing reports on children in Europe during Second World War, and the United Nations, advocating for women's rights around the world. She married Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice and veteran U. S. diplomat, credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin.
