Self published by the artist Peter Joseph Paffenholz in cooperation with the printer E. Gronenberg. An extraordinary interpretation of Goethe's Faust executed in 59 bold woodcuts with captioned quotes from the drama and 21 chapter deviders. Vollmer III, 538. An impressive work by this German artist who was persecuted and interned at various times by the Nazis starting in 1933. Text in German. Wraps and block age toned, else in very good condition.
