About this Item
A manuscript letter from 20th century artist Edward Bawden, addressed to novelist John Symonds. The letter is dated to May 18th 1973 from Bawden's home in Essex. Bawden informs Symonds that he is unable to undertake the illustrations for his novel 'A Christmas Story'. He goes on to explain this is due to his 'inclination. to keep free of jobs until the next mural is ready for painting'. The letter is then signed off by Bawden. On the same page, in red ink, Symonds appears to share his thoughts upon receiving the letter; 'I was neither surprised nor disappointed, for I knew he'd say no.' Additionally, he writes 'the reason he declined was that I hadn't a publication for the work.' Suggesting this as the true reason Bawden did not accept his offer. The letter is in fine condition with a crease due to folding. Please contact Christian White Rare Books Ltd for more information or images of this item. Seller Inventory # 8078
