About this Item
Original marbled wrappers, stitched. [72]pp. Two folded sheets with a handwritten Alphabet to the Ledger laid in. The first ten leaves show financial statements with lines for tobacco, broad cloth, muslin, wine, brandy, etc., and then the balance for the ledger. The rest of the leaves contain several poems and a couple of recipes. Five of the poems seem to be original compositions by L. S. Walkley and are signed by him (two are also dated). One is titled Epitaph on Betsey Camp. Another five (in the same handwriting) are unsigned. The last poem and the two recipes appear written by a different hand. Our research suggests that L. S. Walkley was a young teacher. Walkley and his wife sailed from Connecticut taking with them lumber with the idea of building a school in the South. The original plan was to reach Florida, then the estuary of the Mississippi, then travel inland until a good site was found. However, Walkley's wife died during the voyage and was buried at sea and all his lumber had to be tossed overboard during a severe storm. Walkley eventually settled in Alabama several years later, where he finally established a school. ; Quarto. Seller Inventory # 27479
