Third Printing (Random House Number Line to 4). The third printing was published in the same year as the first, 10/70 is at the bottom of the rear flap of the dust jacket. The book is signed and inscribed to Ann and Leonard. I purchased this book some years ago at the home of Ann and Leonard Sand. Judge Leonard B. Sand was the presiding judge in the landmark Yonkers, New York, segregation case. The case was dramatized in the HBO mini-series 'Show Me a Hero,' based on the book of the same title by Lisa Belkin, a former reporter for The New York Times. Bob Balaban portrayed Judge Sand. Ann Sand (nee Sulzberger) was the first cousin of Arthur Ochs (Punch) Sulzberger, the former publisher of The New York Times. The inscription reads 'For Ann and Leonard, all my best wishes, peace and love, Charles. Dec. 3 1970.' Once listed, I believe this will be the only signed copy of the book for sale anywhere on the Internet. This book was a huge sensation when it was first published. 'Reich was a Professor at Yale Law School when he wrote the 1970 paean to the 1960s counterculture and youth movement. Excerpts of the book first appeared in The New Yorker, and its seismic reception there helped the book to leading The New York Times Best Seller list.' In 1964 Reich's article The New Property 'influenced the Supreme Court to broaden its conceptualization of property in the landmark administrative law case Goldberg v. Kelly. Both Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton were students of Professor Reich when he was writing The Greening of America and he is mentioned in their biographies.' The Greening of America has its own Wikipedia page. The Overview section of it reads as follows: 'The book's argument rests on three separate types of consciousness. "Consciousness I " applies to the world-view of rural farmers and small businesspeople that arose and was dominant in 19th century America. "Consciousness II" represents a viewpoint of "an organizational society", featuring meritocracy and improvement through various large institutions; it dominated the New Deal, World War II and 1950s generations. "Consciousness III" represents the worldview of the 1960s counterculture, focusing on personal freedom, egalitarianism, and recreational drugs. The book mixed sociological analysis with panegyrics to rock music, cannabis, and blue jeans, arguing that these fashions embodied a fundamental shift in world view.' I presently have a good view of the book's covers and can say that they are exceptionally clean. Also that the gilt and red lettering on the front and spine is very bright, and that there is little to no wear. The corners and edges are in excellent shape. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover, with nicely tight pages and no cracks or spaces anywhere. The front cover does bow out, but just a little bit. The pages are exceptionally clean. I am scrolling through without seeing any instances of soiling. I'm not finding any creasing or dogeared corners. I did find a roach of a joint. Just kidding, no roach. There are no markings. There are no attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The jacket can be seen in the first few photos. It is in, overall, very good condition. I don't see any tears. There are no losses at the corners or anywhere else. I'll identify the imperfections: there are, what I believe to be, two light imprints of paper clips off the top edge of the front, there's some very light toning, there's but looks like a tiny bit of soiling at the top right corner of the front, and there are, in total, a few small creases and a scratch or two. The flaps are in solid condition. No tears, no creases. There's just a little bit of very light spotting off the top and inside edge of the rear flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. Seller Inventory # 002557
