Contemporary half-calf and cloth. 12mo. 365pp. Inscribed by the author in 1889 to the actress Beatrice Cameron. A melodramatic Victorian novel about an orphaned young woman pursued by two men- one rich and the other poor. She goes to London to pursue a life on the stage but falls onto hard times. After inheriting money from her paternal grandfather she marries well but the rich suitor from her past tries to blackmail her. The novel ends with a court case in which her past is brought up. A good copy with some heavy rubbing and wear to the calf spine. The text is good with some light soiling. A contents page is chipped and a few page corners are folded. Seller Inventory # 11228
