About this Item
Signed and numbered edition of 5 plus 2 artist proofs. 36 pages. 10 x 8 inches in a layflat presentation. Richard Newton began making artists books in 1974. The early books used ink, or were created using a Black and White Xerox machine. Most of the books are one-of-a-kind. However, some editions exist; the largest being an edition of ten. The book of Bud was originally conceived in 2010 as an installation of book pages displayed throughout a gallery space. Page 4 was exhibited in the Artiquarium for Narratives of the Perverse II at Jancar Gallery in Los Angeles, 2011. Pages 4 and 10 were exhibited in the Artiquarium for Have You Seen My Privacy at 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica, 2011. Here, Bud is presented in a more traditional book format. This book melds memory fragments of four men who greatly influenced his life. Peter Anthony Wachtler, his brother who passed in 2000 at age 51. Earl Newton, a driver for P.I.E., his father figure from my age 6, until 18, when Earl told Richard his presence was no longer desirable. Jim Newton, Hazel's son by a previous marriage, who 11 years Richard's senior, provided a mysterious look into adulthood. And Bud. He was Earl s wife, Hazel s boyfriend until he was shot and killed in a Modjeska Canyon dive bar. Bud is remembered only by his first name. Newton's mixed emotions, and selective memories live in the poem written on the pages of Bud. Seller Inventory # 0022_RN_Bud_2020
