Presentation copy to Sir Basil Embry, Battle of Britain Air Chief Marshal, and signed "Respectfully, Richard Pape, Sept. '53". A gripping WWII account of Pape's being shot down over Germany and his subsequent escape across Europe, signed and dedicated to another highly decorated WWII hero and survivor. Sir Basil Edward Embry (1902 - 1977) was the Commander-in-Chief of Fighter Command from 1949 to 1953. He too was shot down over Germany, captured by the German army, escaped and evaded recapture for two months in occupied France, before getting home to England via Spain and Gibraltar. 8vo, 309pp, maps. Red gilt cloth, in the original color illustrated dust jacket. Cloth a bit rubbed at spine ends. Dust jacket rubbed, top of dj spine missing, dusty at rear panel. Internally, very good condition.
