THE MAN WHO REPORTED ON THE HAUNTED HOUSE OF NEW ORLEANS. Letter from Armand Saillard, French consul in New Orleans, dated 26 March 1835, to the Intendants de la Santé Publique in Marseille, France. 1 p. 4to. Folds. Short letter mentioning the situation of cholera in New Orleans in 1835. In French. Formal letter signed by the consul who added a P.S. one line "30 mai - Depuis deux jours je n ai pas entendu citer de nouveaux cas de cholera" [May 30th. In the last two days, I have not heard of new cholera cases]. Armand SAILLARD (1790-1842) was the person who submitted a detailed report to the French Foreign Minister on the Madame Lalaurie case. This famous case in the history of New Orleans involved a woman and her husband who were accused of torturing and killing several slaves in what was later called "The Haunted House", Saillard s correspondence of the times was also the source of a relatively recent book (Les aventures du consul de France de Nouvelle Orléans à Carthagène. La Rochelle, 1981). The cholera pandemic referred to in this letter was the one which lasted from 1831 to 1837 and travelled from Europe to eastern Canada then to the United States. In 1833 in New Orleans, 5 000 people died of cholera. Postal marks; Marseille receiving pm July 26; incomplete Nantes pm. Manuscript rate "20".
