About this Item

Description:

- Letter penned on 1-1/2 sides of a sheet of lined paper approximately 9 inches high by 7 inches wide. Signed "Alice Williamson". Folded once for mailing. There are several tiny pinholes along the fold. The paper is lightly creased with a tear to & a piece out of the top edge & a light paper-clip mark to the left edge ["Do forgive this scribbling paper. It is all I have at the moment" she writes]. Very good. A letter with excellent content referring to the publication of two of Alice Williamson's novels. The letter is addressed to William Valentine Alexander, an American editor and an associate of Edward Bok, editor of the Ladies Home Journal for thirty years [1889-1919]. "Many thanks for another very kind letter from you, and for the 'Lady Betty' proofs for January. My husband has read them carefully, making a very few corrections, and I return them now." After commenting on how encouragement from editors helps authors do their best work, she goes on: "We shall certainly get Mr. McClure to give 'The Botor Chaperon' to Mr. Bok, if he wants it. It seems to go very well now, but of course it is different from 'Lady Betty' and more like 'The Lightning Conductor', 'My Friend the Chauffeur', and so on, as there is a good deal about travel in Holland."Born Alice Muriel Linvingston [1859-1933], the British novelist married Charles Norris Williamson in 1894. After her marriage she used the name "Mrs. C. N. Williamson" and many of her books were co-written with her husband. A number of their novels covered the early days of motoring and can also be viewed as travelogues. Seller Inventory # 34576
