Helene Hanff (1916-1997) was an American writer, who began her career writing for television in the early days of broadcast TV. She is, perhaps, best known as the author of the book84, Charing Cross Road, which became the basis for a stage play, television play, andfilmof the same name. 84, Charing Cross chronicles Hanff's 20 years of correspondence withFrank Doel (1908-1968), the chief buyer forMarks & Co. at 84, Charing Cross Road in London. Written in an epistolary style, 84, Charing Cross Roadwas published in 1970, and details how Marks & Co., and Doel, provided the hard-to-find classics and British books that Hanff loved. Although they never met personally, the relationship between Hanff and Doel blossomed into a very close association of friendship and admiration. Hanff would write several books as a follow-up to 84, Charing Cross Road. In 1987, a feature film was released on the book, starring Anne Bancroft as Helene Hanff and Anthony Hopkins as Frank Doel. Synopsis: It all began with a letter inquiring about second-hand books, written by Helene Hanff in New York, and posted to a bookshop at 84, Charing Cross Road in London. As Helene's sarcastic and witty letters are responded to by the stodgy and proper Frank Doel of 84, Charing Cross Road, a relationship blossoms into a warm and charming long-distance friendship lasting many years.
Review:
One of the subtlest, sharpest, most moving relationships ever formed between pen pals. I can't imagine [84 Charing Cross Road] without Stevenson and Nettles. Her warmth, his reticence, their shared love of old books made me weep. I miss books horribly, but audios as perfect as this make up for the loss. (GUARDIAN)
