About this Item
Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Ed Fitzsimmons, With hopes of sharing time again in La Paz or one of the other coastal parts of Mexico, ASL." Also signed in full, "A. Starker Leopold," on the title page. Uncommon signed, with no other copies available at the time of this writing, and an uncommon book in general. The recipient, Edward Fitzsimmons, appears to have lived in Berkeley and belonged to several ornithology societies. Aldo Starker Leopold was the oldest son of the great conservationist Aldo Leopold, and he went on to be an important wildlife biologist and conservationist in his own right. He was for thirty years a professor in theZoology, Conservation, and Forestry departments at UC Berkeley.Wildlife of Mexicois considered his masterwork and was the winner of the Wildlife Society Publication of the Year Award. Based on more than twelve years of work including at 51 different camp field study sites, after a general overview of about 100 pages the book includes full accounts of 150 species of birds and mammals across the extremely varied environments of Mexico. Species account illustrations by Charles W. Schwartz, who also illustrated A Sand County Almanac, a nice continuity. Rich with black and white photos as well. Leopold first and foremost acknowledges William Voigt as helping to guide and raise the money for this project. A large octavo or small quarto, 300 pages, heavy on account of the glossy paper. Yellow cloth boards with a green cloth spine. A very good copy with a slight spine lean and one small spot of minor fraying to lower spine. Slight waviness to edges of first six or so pages. The jacket is good only with a large piece missing to upper left quadrant of rear panel along with tears to spine ends, but the front panel presents well. Seller Inventory # 1356
