About this Item
A lovely & entertaining volume in excellent condition by the esteemed and prolific writer George William Curtis, whose writings and lectures were highly valued in both literary and political society of the mid to late 1800's. Written with a charming and witty style, the admiration and warm regard that Curtis had for Washington Irving make this a rich and compelling story that's far more satisfying than a collection of dry biographical facts. In addition to author Curtis' literary career as a colleague of Hawthorne, Emerson, and Thoreau, he also spoke widely as an abolitionist and civil rights advocate, helped found the early Republican Party, was political editor of Harper's Weekly and a member of New York City's board of education, and was instrumental in reforming the civil service branch of the U.S. government.
