About this Item
Illustrated. 328 pages, frontis, 48 illustrations mostly from photographs taken especially for this work. J. H. Taylor was at the top of his game when he wrote this book having won three Open Championships with two more coming in the future. There are 41 chapters dealing on a wide array of topics including many about the golf courses themselves (Taylor was a top-tier designer with over 100 courses to his credit.) There are historical and autobiographical chapters, chapters about Golf in America, The Upkeep of Golf Links, The Golf Ball, Seaside Courses, Lengthening Courses (already a problem in 1902 after the longer-distance Haskell rubber core ball was patented in 1899), Machine and Hand-Made Clubs, Golf Clubs and Their Manufacture, etc. with a good number on the varying aspects of play. Written on the ffep "Mr. Greenwood, With the Publisher's Compliments 1902." LAID IN IS A POSTCARD INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY TAYLOR: "WITH ALL GOOD WISHES FOR 'A HAPPY CHRISTMAS' & 'PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR' YOURS SINCERELY, J. H." Much better than average copy. Green cloth and gilt decorations are in excellent condition both on the front cover and the spine, little wear to cloth, lower front corner slightly bumped. Original end papers tanned from pastedown offset, small stain p. 17. Contents clean: no bookplate, owner name, foxing, underlining, marginalia, creases, tears, etc. The beautifully decorated cover, one of the most handsome in the library of golf, is a companion image to that used for May Hezlet's book, Ladies Golf, printed in 1904. Uncommon first edition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 201992
