Napier Drummond is a tough successful brewing magnate who needs to buy a piece of land owned by Sybilla in order to build an extension to his malting factory. He is surprised when she refuses to sell the land and tries every means to bully, cajole and bribe he into selling. There are balls, dinner parties, wooing and quarrelling before the matter is resolved. During this time Napier, who at first only wants Sybilla's land, finds himself falling in love with her.
