The autobiography of Dr. Leon Speroff and the story of the Macedonian-American Speroff family. The volume presents Speroff's very personal life-journey and his account of his career as a prominent professor of gynecology and obstetrics, combined with his recollections, notes and reflections on Macedonia and the family's cultural heritage, including accounts of many visits to Macedonia between 1972-2010. The Speroff family came from the Macedonian mountain village of Selo German, with his grandfather coming to America in 1911, and the rest of the family following him to Ohio in 1921. Leon Speroff (1935-) studied at Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and went on to teach at Yale (1970-1976), the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center (1976-1983), Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (1983-1989), and Oregon Health & Science University (1989-2011). He is Professor Emeritus and former Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine, and a former Arthur H. Bill Professor and Chairman of the Department of Reproductive Biology at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He has also the author of two medical biographies: Carlos Montezuma, M.D., a Yavapai American hero: the life and times of an American Indian 1866-1923 (2005) and A Good Man: Gregory Goodwin Pincus: the man, his story, the birth control pill (2009).
