First edition of this tribute to Alice Freeman Palmer, the onetime president of Wellesley College, the first woman to head a nationally known college. From the library of Richard Watson Gilder, the iconic editor of Century Magazine, who inscribed the copy: "R. W. Gilder from Mr. Palmer April 1903," on the front endpaper; laid in is a card from Alice's husband, "From George Herbert Palmer Harvard University." Gilder's signature again appears at the end of his eulogistic poem, "December Sixth," on page 11; and annotations on page 36 and the back endpaper. A compelling association copy.
