Seller: Rareeclectic, Pound ridge, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Limited Edition ('One Thousand copies in cloth'). First edition (SD). The book is signed and inscribed ( 'For Bonnie + Charles Tyler with warmest best wishes, Peyton Houston, October 6, 1990' ) on the second front end paper. Charles Ives Tyler was the son of Edith Ives Tyler who was the only child of American composer Charles Ives and his wife Harmony Twichell. Harmony Twichell was the daughter of Joseph Hopkins Twichell who was a close friend of Mark Twain for over forty years. They traveled together to Bermuda in 1877 and to Germany and Switzerland in 1878. Their six week trip through the Black Forest and Swiss Alps in Europe became the basis for Twain's book, A Tramp Abroad. Twichell is believed to be the model for the character Harris. Twichell was a writer as well as a Reverend and officiated at the marriage of Twain. So the previous owner of this book was Charles Ives' grandson and Joseph Hopkins Twichell's great grandson. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are very clean. The lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges and corners are in excellent shape. So are the spine ends. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I am not finding any instances of soiling. I'm not seeing any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. I have rated the dust jacket only Good. There are no tears or losses, but the rear cover has a good deal of foxing on its lower half. There's also a small crease off the top edge of the front cover just adjacent to the spine. The flaps are in very solid condition, a few specks on the edge of the front flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 005405
