Upon reading this book, de la Mare declared it "poetry diffused into prose" (quoted in Wilson, p. 303). A decade after presenting this copy, Sassoon contributed the poem "Salutation from an Old Friend" to the volume Tribute to Walter de la Mare on His 75th Birthday (1948). Sassoon and de la Mare were lifelong associates and mutual sources of artistic inspiration, and, upon de la Mare's death in 1956, Sassoon unveiled a plaque in his memory in St Paul's Cathedral.
