Thick 8vo., decorative red cloth in dust jacket; 334 pages plus a 17-page index First Edition, second printing. Signed by Bolton on the front endpaper. Also, with a single-age typed letter signed from Bolton, on Department History stationery on University of California, Berkeley, dated May 16, 1934. Square, tight, and unmarked. No owner's name or bookplate. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Folding maps are crisp, complete and appear unused. Pages are clean and fresh. 66 illustrations and 11 maps, four folding. "First Edition" so stated, but originally published in 1930 as volume 1 of Bolton's Anza's California Expeditions (See Rocq #8359). A study of Spanish exploration and colonization. Has sections on opening a land route to California; Anza's proposal; in Kino's footsteps; through Papago Land; the Camino del Diablo; Down the Colorado; Yumas and Cajuenches; the battle with the sand dunes; along the base of the Sierras, Garces on the back track; a colony for San Francisco Bay; the San Diego uprising; first through the Golden Gate; the tall redwoods and the timid black angels; the Rio Grande de San Francisco; a lone watch on the Colorado; Anza and Palma in Mexico; etc. Large map at rear (unfolds to 18" wide by 19.5" tall) shows Anza's Route through Pimeria Alta, 1774-1776, [routes of the first and second expeditions, presidios, missions, etc].
