Lacking the dust jacket. Not ex-library and no internal markings other than the inscription. Endpapers are crisp and white. Light rubbing at the extremities. John Edward Williams (1922-1994) was an American author, editor and professor. This second of his two evolumes of poetry was published in the same year as "Stoner." The title comes from his poem The Poet (page 36): "It was the wearing flesh / That used me. Skillful, sly / I urged upon chaotic fact / The necessary lie.". Seller Inventory # L-WI1965H_0924
