About this Item
Near Fine/NF. First edition, first (and probably only) printing. Original thin tan cardboard wraps with an Edmund Dulac drawing and title design in dark brown on the front cover. The reverse of the half title page has this note "Cinq exemplaires de cet ouvrage tires a part sur japon sont hors commerce", while the half title page has a presentation inscription from Touny-Lerys (a pseudonym for Toulouse poet Marcel Marchand) dated 1908. The paper in this book is smooth and thick enough to be japon, but without another copy to compare one hesitates to claim this as one of the 5 copies not to be sold, although combined with the author's presentation inscription "a M Aubrie Leuf bien cordialement Touny-Lerys" it makes for a fairly compelling case. The pages are slightly tanned from age but are otherwise clean. The wrappers are covered with a complete tissue cover which is probably not original to the book, but except for very slight chips at the ends of the spine the very fragile covers are in exceptionally well preserved condition and thus were no doubt protected in some fashion. This, the first published work of literature containing Dulac's work, is a rare and elusive work cited by Hughie (#3) based on a copy of the cover only and thus with only an estimated (1901) date of publication and without further bibliographical information about the book itself ("The cover art by Dulac is probably the only work in the book by him. No date is known, but stylistically the work appears to be from his student days in Toulouse."). Dulac would have been 20 the year this publication appeared.
