About this Item

For much of her life Madeline DeFrees was a nun - a member of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, and known by the name, Sister Mary GIlbert. In 1973 she was "dispensed of her religious vows", and, aside from writing poetry of a high caliber, has spent her time teaching at various universities. She has been honored with several awards for her poetry. "Magpie on the Gallows" was published in 1982 by Copper Canyon Press. This is a signed copy of the First Edition in paperback format (released simultaneously with the hardcover). DeFrees's dated signature is written on the half-title.
