About this Item
* AS PICTURED - FIVE IMAGES * FIRST EDITION, First Printing, 1875. 8vo; blue cloth boards stamped gilt to front and spine, with black rulings and Swiss Cross emblem encircled at top left front. Boards both back and front are still predominantly bright, with only moderate wear to corners and edges; the spine panel, alas, cannot be similarly described. Here, there is darkening, rubbing, splitting and minor losses to top and tail, and an unpleasant missing portion just below the author's name. Internally: the page block is largely well constructed and secure, although one section (pp193-208) is almost entirely loose; also splitting beginning at eps gutters. Eps are brown, the front pastedown having a pale green ex-libris bookplate with b/w mountains design and text, and below that handwritten in black biro-'April 1971. Bequeathed to the Library of the Fell and Rock Climbing Club by Molly Fitzgibbon, Hon Librarian 1935 - 1966.' Opposite this, ffep recto, is a similarly designed plate in white with black mountain design, and beneath that, : 'The Fell & Rock Climbing Club of the English Lake District'. Following this,to Half Title page in neat handwritten fountain pen: 'Presented to Major H R H the Duke of Connaught . . .with the profound respects of the author. October 8th 1875. Pagination: xxvi + 294pp + 40pp adverts for Henry S King's other publications, dated February, 1875. LIST of MAPS: General Map of Theatre of War; Map of Switzerland; Combat of Feldkirch; Combat of Tauffers, First Battle of Zurich; Second Battle of Zurich; Map of Valtelline; Map of Position of the Grimsel; Map of Turning Manoeuvre of the French. All nine correct, as called for - folding maps with wood engravings of a truly extraordinary degree of fine detail, finesse and accuracy. All are in relatively Fine condition, with only minor tears here and there and a little light foxing encroaching from the occasional areas affected throughout the text, although really nowhere too badly. It would seem that none of the various beneficiaries were sufficiently interested to read from cover to cover; many of the pages remain unopened at their top edge. An extraordinary work, and very scarce indeed. FARRAGO will willingly provide further details/images on request. Buyers from outside the U.K. may have details of Shipping costs prior to purchase.
